A Very Special Late Night

Friday night was a special night for many North Carolinians… it marked the start of the 2010-2011 UNC Men’s Basketball season with the team taking the court for the first time in front of the public at the annual Late Night with Roy. For some of the attendees it was extra special… it was a chance for a few kids to take a break from receiving treatment at the N.C. Children’s Hospital.

Carolina Dreams is a service-based group that pairs patients from the N.C. Children’s Hospital  with student-athletes as they attend an athletic event.  Carolina Dreams was developed by David Werry, a former member of the Men’s Lacrosse team. This year the Women’s Tennis and Swimming & Diving hosted the event for nine families.

Carolina Dreams is an extremely popular event among athletic teams.  Over 50 people attended including both  families and s-a. The experience is extremely gratifying and special to student-athletes because of the inspiring journeys they hear from the kids. Both teams are worn down from training as both have upcoming matches/meets; Women’s Tennis has its ITA Regional Championships starting Thursday and Swimming & Diving will host UGA on Friday.  But after meeting these courageous kids along with their amazing families, both teams have a renewal of energy. It’s inspiring to listen to the positive outlook these kids have on life, even when they are going through a difficult time.
