Track and Field Get Into the Spirit of Giving

The holiday season is filled with family and friends celebrating the end of one year and the beginning of another. And the Track & Field team is no different. The team celebrates the end of the 2010 spring Track season and the 2010 Cross Country season at its annual Christmas Party.  The party not only celebrates the team’s accomplishments but invites three families from Durham-Chapel Hill to join the celebration.

This years Christmas party took place on December 8 at the Friday Center’s Trillium room.  Before the award ceremony began, Coach Craddock introduced the families to the team. While dinner was served, awards were handed out to All-Americans, All-ACC, Regional and National Qualifiers from the previous season. Other awards included the Gene Anderson Award for the highest GPA on the team, the Joe Hilton Coaches Award, and Most Valuable Player.

After the awards, the team passed out gifts to the families. A present that every runner cannot live without… shoes, were given to one of the little girls. She was so excited to receive them that she gave Sophomore Mariana Lucena a great big hug.

“It’s ultimately priceless to see the joy of the kids and the parents when they open the presents and realize what is being unwrapped is actually theirs to keep and cherish,” said Lucena.

After presents the ceremony was concluded with the “Track Choir” singing and performing holiday songs. Lucena understands the importance of sharing her holidays with others:

“I am very happy to know that the track family can have a good end to the year, but at the same time provide a holiday night, gifts, and joy to the three families!”

Merry Christmas everyone! Hope you all have a wonderful holiday and embrace the spirit of giving!
