iBELLieve in Love 5K

Carolina Dreams announces its first iBELLieve in Love 5k run/walk to take place on Sunday February 13 at 11 a.m.  at the UNC Ranson-Hamrick Cross Country course.

Carolina Dreams is a program that brings children who are being treated at the N.C. Children’s Hospital to a campus athletic event, where they can hang out and eat pizza with student-athletes before they head to the game together.

“It is such a fun time and so inspirational to spend time with such amazing kids and their families. Because we have had so much fun with these families, we are actively trying to get more events started through this program,” said Meghan Lyons, a red shirt freshman Field Hockey player and also a member of the Dream Team.

After meeting Simon Ibell in October, the Dream Team created the iBELLieve in Love 5K. Ibell is the founder and CEO of the iBellieve Foundation which hopes to find a cure for Mucopolysaccharidosis (MPS) II Hunter Syndrome, a rare disease that Ibell has himself.

Ibell was treated at the UNC Hospitals which is one of the few hospitals  in the country that can treat Hunter Syndrome. While receiving treatment at the hospital, Ibell met Dr. Jacob Lohr and Cricket Lane, both board members of UNC Dance Marathon. And the iBellieve collaboration was born.

“We are so excited about this! It should be a great time to join forces with the Children’s Hospital, iBellieve Foundation, and hopefully with some support from Dance Marathon, the proceeds going towards the iBellieve Foundation. It’s also an opportunity to raise awareness for Hunter Syndrome and for the iBellieve Foundation,” said Lyons.

Ibell hopes to build an MPS Center facility near Meadowmont to support patients and families. He also wants to start a global campaign called “Be Fair to Rare,” a campaign that will help raise funds, knowledge and encourage policy change for all 7,000 rare diseases in Canada and Worldwide.

To support or participate in the Carolina Dreams iBELLieve in Love 5K Run/Walk,  register HERE. Registration before February 10 is $15 per person and $20 per couple.  February 10 up until race day is $20 per person and $25 per couple.
